The Elegance and Depth of a Great White Burgundy

The Estate

Acquired by the Cournut family in 1940, Château de la Maltroye is an essential estate located in the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, in Burgundy. With a remarkable historical heritage, including its fifteenth-century cellars, the estate spans fifteen hectares. Since 1993, Jean-Pierre Cournut, a former aeronautical engineer, has been at the helm of the estate. He has succeeded in modernising the facilities while preserving the authentic expression of the terroirs. Thanks to a rigorous approach and judicious investments, the estate now produces wines renowned for their precision and outstanding quality.

The Vineyard

The Bâtard-Montrachet is a renowned cru located between the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, at an altitude ranging from 240 to 250 metres. Facing east and south, the vines thrive on thick brown limestone soils, resting on a clay and gravelly subsoil that promotes drainage. The estate favours environmentally responsible viticulture, with mechanical soil tillage, integrated pest management and strict yield control through green harvesting. The grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted.

The Vintage

The year was marked by particularly favourable weather conditions. The growing cycle saw temperatures above seasonal averages along with a water deficit. This vintage is especially notable for record sunshine, providing the equivalent of an extra month of July, which allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness.

Winemaking and Aging

The winemaking of this Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 begins with rapid pressing within two hours of harvesting to preserve the freshness of the juice. Alcoholic fermentation begins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks before finishing in oak barrels. The wine is then aged for twelve months, with a suitable proportion of new oak, followed by light fining and filtration before bottling.

Grape Variety

100% Chardonnay.
