Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos des Issarts" Monopole 2022 by Domaine Faiveley
Tasting
Colour
With a deep ruby red colour, this wine captures the light brilliantly.
Nose
Complex and rich, the nose exudes aromas of ripe fruit, harmoniously blended with woody notes and a distinctive touch of liquorice.
Palate
The palate seduces with its elegance and fine balance, supported by fine, round and silky tannins. Flavours of ripe red fruit, such as cherry, raspberry and cranberry, mingle with subtle touches of spice, oak and hints of undergrowth. The finish is remarkable for its length and persistence.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with game meats, cuts of beef (rib, sirloin) or roast pork. It also perfectly accompanies Mediterranean-inspired dishes based on mushrooms or truffles, roast veal with morels, as well as characterful cheeses such as Époisses or aged Comté.
The Elegance and Complexity of a Premier Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin
The Estate
Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley, Domaine Faiveley is a historic figure in Burgundy. Now led by the seventh generation, embodied by Erwan Faiveley and his sister Eve, the estate oversees a vast vineyard of 120 to 127 hectares spread across the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise. Under the guidance of cellar master Jérôme Flous, the estate has evolved its style toward greater finesse, while also obtaining organic farming certification for all of its land in 2025.
The Vineyard
The vineyard from which this Gevrey-Chambertin originates covers just 0.61 hectares to the south-west of the village, making it the smallest monopole in Burgundy. This terraced terroir overlooks the Mazis crus and borders Ruchottes. The upper terrace lends power, while the lower part, with its lighter, stonier soils, imparts mineral and floral notes. The vines, planted between 1971 and 2023, are grown organically, involving manual bud thinning and careful canopy management.
The Vintage
The year began with a cool spring, punctuated by a few warm days in late April and early May. After budburst in mid-April, the vines grew slowly but steadily. Summer warmth arrived in late May, providing ideal conditions for flowering in early June. The harvest, which began in early September, yielded berries of optimal ripeness, resulting in a generous crop.
Winemaking and Aging
For this Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos des Issarts" Monopole 2022, the facilities favour gravity flow in place of pumping systems. Aging takes place in new and used oak barrels, with a shortened time in barrel and careful management of the wood to minimise green tannins and preserve a pure expression of the terroir.
