Description
Layered and Complex Chardonnay by Domaine Leflaive
Established in 1920, Domaine Leflaive is a family-run winery with a deep history in Burgundy viticulture. In 1717, Claude Leflaive purchased a parcel of land in Puligny-Montrachet and became one of the first vignerons recorded in the area. Years later in 1905, Joseph Leflaive inherited the family plot and expanded the domaine’s reach, purchasing exceptional land in the aftermath of phylloxera. With the help from his friend and vineyard manager Francois Virot, Joseph replanted phylloxera resistant rootstock and grafted Chardonnay vines.
In 1990, Anne-Claude Leflaive took Domaine Leflaive to new heights through her experimentation with biodynamics. By 1996, Anne-Claude restored the health of the vineyards and converted to strictly biodynamic farming. Through her progressive approach to viticulture and dedication to the terroir and vineyards, Domaine Leflaive is considered a benchmark producer for white Burgundy wines.
Today, Domaine Leflaive is run by fourth generation Brice de La Morandiere. He took over the 44 hectares in 2015 and continues his family’s legacy.
The Domaine Leflaive Macon-Verze vineyards sit on a western-facing slope with calcareous clay soils with limestone and marl. Domaine Leflaive purchased five parcels of mature Chardonnay in this appellation in 2004 and has cultivated everything biodynamically since the very first year of acquisition.
The Domaine Leflaive Macon-Verze 2017 is fermented and aged for 12 months in concrete and oak, then for an additional four months in stainless steel. The result is a pure and expressive wine. Floral and mineral aromas leap out of the glass, while fruity notes of lemon, pear and orange peel round out the nose. The palate is energetic and round with plenty of minerality and acidity. It is a balanced wine, with fruity notes of pear, apple and a touch of spice for a layered complexity.
