Description
Tasting notes and tips for the Mâcon-Verzé 2019 from Domaine Leflaive
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a white colour with green highlights and a delicate pale yellow hue.
Nose
Remarkably pure, the aromatic bouquet blends citrus notes such as lemon and grapefruit with aromas of apple and pear, all lifted by elegant hints of white flowers.
Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate charms with its balance and perfectly integrated acidity. An invigorating salinity carries through to a long, clean, dry and slightly juicy finish.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled fish, seafood, white meat in a creamy mushroom sauce, and both fresh and aged goat's cheeses.
Serving and ageing
Although it can be enjoyed young, this Mâcon-Verzé 2019 also has the ageing potential to develop gracefully in the cellar for a few years.
Burgundian excellence in the heart of the Mâconnais by Domaine Leflaive
The estate
Located in Puligny-Montrachet in Burgundy, Domaine Leflaive was truly established in the 1920s by Joseph Leflaive, in the wake of the phylloxera crisis. A true pioneer, the estate has followed the principles of biodynamics for over twenty-five years, a philosophy introduced by Anne-Claude Leflaive. Today, Brice de la Morandière, representing the fourth generation, is at the helm of the domaine. He continues this pursuit of excellence and the pure expression of terroir, placing the estate among the most prestigious in the region.
The vineyard
Acquired in the early 2000s, the plots dedicated to Mâcon-Verzé lie in the Verzé valley on clay-limestone soils of varying depths. Farmed biodynamically, these vines, with an average age of 28 years, enjoy south-east and south-west exposures, which promote optimal ripening of the grapes while preserving their freshness.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage was shaped by particularly contrasting weather conditions. After a difficult spring, with frost affecting the lower slopes, and a complicated flowering that led to coulure and millerandage, the summer brought intense heatwaves. These challenges reduced yields by around 30%, but produced highly concentrated berries, harvested by hand from mid-September onwards.
Winemaking and ageing
For this Mâcon-Verzé 2019, the winemaking favours purity and the direct expression of terroir. Both the alcoholic fermentation, carried out with indigenous yeasts, and the malolactic fermentation take place entirely in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 16 months in the same tanks, followed by light fining and gentle filtration if necessary, with no oak influence whatsoever.
