James Suckling

A fresh and crunchy Fontalloro with currants, orange peel and hints of peaches and cedar. Medium body, firm and fine tannins and a crisp, bright finish. Lots of energy and verticality to this! Drink after 2025.

Danielle Callegari

Freshly turned soil, spent coffee grounds and pencil shavings are on the nose with just a hint of dried cherry opening onto a palate bursting with fresh cherries and orange peel, structured by tannins that are welcoming but nonetheless hold their integrity.

Description

A refined and balanced Tuscan wine

The estate

In 1966, Domenico Poggiali acquired Fattoria Fèlsina, during a time when Tuscany was undergoing a real wine renaissance with Super Tuscan wines. Located in the south-east of the historic area of Chianti Classico and Crete Senesi in the province of Siena, the Fèlsina estate spreads over almost 600 hectares, 95 of which are planted with vines, and thus brings together all the fine terroirs that make up the charm and reputation of Tuscany in Italy. The philosophy of the Fèlsina estate is based on simple values: to reveal the expression of the Tuscan terroir and grape varieties through Italian wines that reflect both history and tradition.

The vineyard

The estate's vineyards are located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the south-eastern part of the Chianti Classico appellation, to the north-east of Siena. They are almost exclusively southwest-facing and lie on windy slopes, at an altitude of 320 to 420 metres above sea level. In the higher parts, the soil is predominantly composed of quartz rock. Limestone mixed with alluvium, sandstone and silt, as well as layers of pebbles, characterise the vineyards that are poised on the edge of the Colli Senesi leading to the Crete Senesi.

The wine

Produced since 1983, Fontalloro di Felsina is a Tuscan wine that stems from the vineyards of Poggio al Sole and Arcidossino. These terroirs benefit from an array of altitudes, soil types and sun exposures.

Vinification and ageing

Manual harvesting in two stages to keep only the high-quality grapes. Destemming and pressing. Fermentation in stainless steel vats for 16 to 20 days with daily pumping over. Aged for 18 to 22 months in French oak barrels before the final blend. After bottling, the wine is aged for a minimum of 8 to 12 months before being released.

The blend

Sangiovese (100%).
