Decanter

Shows richness and ripeness on the palate, countered by pretty strident acidity. Not quite at its best at the moment and likely needs 12 months in bottle. Should then open out and be a fine example.

The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has a backward and stony nose–it has closed up since I tasted it last year. The palate is quite candied on the entry with Clementine and touches of mango, a hint of spice towards the finish that feels rather linear and correct. Moderate length. Give this another 12 months in bottle.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" 2022 Jean-Marc Brocard

Tasting

Colour
This French white wine displays a pale yellow hue enhanced by pronounced green highlights.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of white peach, accompanied by spicy nuances and a saline minerality. With aeration, hints of candied orange peel and apricot emerge.

Palate
The palate reveals flavours of lime and Granny Smith apple, carried by a lovely freshness. The mid-palate, dense and concentrated, offers a subtly rich texture with hints of candied citrus. The finish lingers on persistent acidity and a saline, mineral backbone.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with scallop puff pastries, a seafood pie or a mushroom risotto. It also goes wonderfully well with dishes such as turbot with beurre blanc, poultry in cream sauce, parsleyed ham or mature cheeses.

Service and storage

For an optimal tasting experience, it is recommended to serve the Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" 2022 at a temperature between 11 and 12°C. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will reach its peak around 2026 and will continue to evolve in the cellar until around 2030.

Other characteristics

This wine has an alcohol content of 13%.

The precise, mineral expression of an iconic Chablis terroir

The estate

Founded in 1973 by Jean-Marc Brocard in Préhy, the estate has established itself as a major player in the Burgundy wine region. Starting with just one hectare, the property now spans nearly 240 hectares. Under the leadership of Julien Brocard, the current owner and managing director, the estate took a decisive turn towards sustainable viticulture in the late 1990s. It now stands as the region's leading producer of organic wines, combining environmental stewardship with precision in the terroir.

The vineyard

The Montée de Tonnerre climat, located in Chablis, rests on shallow Kimmeridgian marl-limestone soils, rich in marine fossils and threaded with veins of blue clay. The plots benefit from a west and southwest exposure on moderate slopes, offering ideal afternoon sunlight while remaining protected from easterly winds. The estate applies sustainable viticultural methods here, notably using robots for ploughing and tracked vehicles to preserve soil structure.

The vintage

2022 began with early budbreak following a mild spring. The summer proved hot and dry, although a timely rainfall episode at the end of June helped avoid excessive water stress. These weather conditions led to an early harvest, starting on 31 August, ensuring optimal ripeness of the berries while preserving their freshness.

Winemaking and aging

From the moment the grapes arrive, the facilities operate by gravity to preserve the integrity of the berries and limit oxidation. The Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" 2022 is aged in large oak vats, lending the wine a subtle complexity and delicate texture while respecting its characteristic mineral backbone from Burgundy.
