Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Louis Latour's 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a brilliant pale gold hue, subtly flecked with emerald reflections, testifying to a beautiful clarity.
Nose
The bouquet opens with pronounced floral notes, intertwined with aromas of white peach and lemon zest. Oak ageing brings an additional dimension with touches of vanilla, toasted almond, almond paste, along with delicate smoky and toasted nuances.
Palate
Full and generous, the palate offers an opulent, silky texture, underpinned by a lovely mineral tension. Orchard fruit flavours intertwine with notes of spice, vanilla and saline minerality. The finish, long and refined, lingers with subtle buttery touches.
Food and wine pairing
This white wine pairs beautifully with delicate dishes such as foie gras, caviar or shellfish like lobster and crayfish. It also goes wonderfully with firm-fleshed fish, poultry in a creamy mushroom sauce, or veal-based preparations.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate this 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. This age-worthy wine can be enjoyed now, but will continue to develop its complexity until around 2038.
The richness and precision of a Grand Cru from Burgundy
The estate
Founded in 1797, the House of Louis Latour is a historic figure in Burgundy. Based in Aloxe-Corton, the estate oversees 48 hectares of vineyards, of which 27 hectares are classified as Grand Cru. Now led by Florent Latour, the family business stands out for its commitment to sustainable viticulture and for owning its own traditional cooperage. Producing wines renowned the world over, the estate combines respect for terroir with innovation, notably through its historic gravity-flow winemaking facility, to reveal the full elegance of the Burgundian climats.
The vineyard
The grapes come from the prestigious Bâtard-Montrachet appellation, situated on deep soils of brown limestone, clay and marl. Within this terroir, the estate cultivates the historic "Clos Poirier" plot, distinguished by a unique north-south orientation of the vines. Around forty years old, these vines benefit from a gentle east-facing slope, promoting optimal morning sunlight exposure for berry ripening.
The vintage
2023 was marked by historically high annual temperatures in Burgundy, mainly due to a particularly mild winter. The favourable water reserves accumulated before the summer season allowed the vines to maintain a lovely freshness and mineral acidity, resulting in berries with perfectly balanced ripeness.
Winemaking and ageing
Following hand-harvesting, the winemaking of the 2023 Bâtard-Montrachet takes place entirely in oak barrels, including full malolactic fermentation. Ageing lasts between eight and ten months in 100% new French oak barrels, crafted by the estate's own cooperage and featuring a medium toast. This process takes place in the historic cellars of the Corton Grancey winemaking facility.
