With a reputation that has migrated from the Italian Mediterranean coast to take its place on the international stage, Ornellaia stands out as one of the greatest Italian names. Founded in 1981, this jewel in the heart of Tuscany is today cared for by the Frescobaldi family who gave it its reputation. In the space of a few decades, the exceptional know-how of the house, supported by consultant oenologist Michel Rolland and oenologist Axel Heinz, established the reputation of these great wines throughout the world while reinterpreting the finesse of Italian wines in the light of a unique terroir.
The 2018 vintage opened with a cold winter which allowed the vines to begin a well-deserved rest. This was followed by one of the wettest springs in modern history, combining rain and high temperatures. The climatic conditions therefore made it possible to compensate for the late budding of the vines with flowering a good week in advance. The rain continued to hydrate the vines until July. Then the sky cleared again and the summer became hot and dry. The berries were loaded with sugar, acidity and grew to a slightly larger size than in previous years. The cooler September nights of the harvest allowed the aromatic expression and acidity of the fruits to be retained. The 2018 vintage of Ornellaia has been labelled La Grazia by the estate, named thus for the sense of symmetry, proportion and harmony that is expressed in the nobility of the wines.
Vinification and ageing
The berries are manually harvested at perfect maturity with the greatest of delicacy before being sent to the cellar. There, the grapes arrive in 15 kg crates to be sorted before and after destemming on a double manual sorting table but also via optical sorting. Then they are lightly pressed. Each grape variety and each plot of vines are vinified separately in order to magnify their singularities. Fermentation takes place for ten days in stainless steel and concrete vats at a temperature varying from 26 to 30 degrees. The maceration then lasts about 15 days which extends the time of the grapes in the vat to one month. The malolactic fermentation is mainly carried out in oak barrels, 70% in new and 30% in single-wine barrels. Finally, the wine is aged in oak barrels in the heart of the Ornellaia temperature controlled cellar for a period of 18 months in total. The wine is blended after the first 12 months. After aging in oak, the wine spends an additional 12 months in the bottle to complete the development of its unique aromatic character.
The colour is a deep ruby, typical of the Ornellaia cuvée.
The aromatic bouquet reveals a lively and intense aromatic expression fully exposed by the character of the vintage. Ornellaia 2018 exudes aromas of red fruits and citrus fruits harmonised with touches of liquorice and Mediterranean garrigue.
In the mouthOrnellaia 2018 embodies a beautifully balanced and enveloping wine. The deep and silky tannins provide elegance and distinction. The finish expresses a long and fresh tangy note.
