The estate

Founded in 1942 by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in Tuscany, Tenuta San Guido extends over 75 hectares in the prestigious region of Bolgheri. Today led by Marquis Nicolo Incisa della Rocchetta, the estate remains in the hands of the family, a member of the Primum Familiæ Vini. The estate revolutionised Italian viticulture with its legendary Sassicaia, the first Super Tuscan to benefit, since 1983, from its own DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia. The estate also produces Guidalberto and Le Difese, expressing the excellence of an exceptional coastal terroir.

The vineyard

The vineyard from which Le Difese 2022 originates is located in IGT Toscana, at altitudes between 100 and 300 metres, benefiting from a west and south-west exposure. The soils are varied and composite, characterised by a strong presence of limestone rich in Alberese and Gabbro, stones and partly clayey.

The vintage

The 2022 vintage in Tuscany is characterised by a tendentially warm climate. Winter and spring were mild, followed by a hot and dry summer. These climatic conditions led to a 27% drop in production due to the heat and to rigorous selection during fruit set. Despite these lower yields, the quality proved excellent, with a fine balance of acidity, a moderate alcohol level and supple, well-integrated tannins.

Winemaking and ageing

The harvest of Le Difese 2022 by Tenuta San Guido was carried out manually, starting on 4 September for the Cabernet Sauvignon and on 16 September for the Sangiovese, and ending in late September. These weather conditions led to a 27% drop in production due to the heat and to rigorous selection during fruit set. Despite these lower yields, the quality proved excellent, with a lovely balance of acidity, moderate alcohol, and supple, well-integrated tannins.

Winemaking and ageing

The harvest of Le Difese 2022 by Tenuta San Guido was carried out by hand, starting on 4 September for the Cabernet Sauvignon and on 16 September for the Sangiovese, and finishing at the end of September. After rigorous selection in the vineyard and then on a sorting table at the winery, the grapes underwent very gentle crushing and destemming. Alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of between 26 and 27°C, with maceration lasting 12 to 14 days for the Cabernet Sauvignon and 11 to 12 days for the Sangiovese. Malolactic fermentation was carried out in stainless steel vats and was completed at the end of November. Ageing took place in French oak barrels previously used for Guidalberto, followed by storage in stainless steel vats at between 3 and 4°C to ensure tartaric stability before bottling.
