Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2023 by Albert Bichot
Tasting
Colour
This wine reveals an intense red colour, typical of the great Pinot Noir wines crafted in the Côte de Nuits.
Nose
The nose stands out for its depth, unveiling notes of red fruits such as raspberry and redcurrant, accompanied by a floral touch of peony, rose and violet. A subtle woody nuance completes this bouquet, which is set to evolve over time towards more spicy and animal aromas.
Palate
On the palate, this Grand Cru skilfully marries power and elegance, offering a voluptuous texture supported by ripe tannins and remarkable aromatic depth.
Food and Wine Pairings
This wine is ideally paired with roasted or braised meats, from beef to game, as well as with mature, soft-rinded cheeses. It also pairs well with a fillet of beef served with a red wine reduction.
Serving and Cellaring
The Charmes-Chambertin 2023 is ideally served between 16 and 17°C, a temperature that allows the bouquet to unfold gradually in the glass.
A Charmes-Chambertin from Gevrey-Chambertin Balancing Structure and Elegance
The Estate
Founded in 1831 in Monthélie by Bernard Bichot, the house of Albert Bichot later settled in Beaune, the historic heart of the Burgundy wine trade. Now led by Albéric Bichot, this family-owned company brings together six estates spread from north to south across Burgundy, from Chablis to Beaujolais, covering around 100 hectares of vines. Committed to controlling production from the vineyard upstream and engaged in organic viticulture in the Côte-d'Or, Albert Bichot combines family tradition with a demanding commitment to quality, while also playing a leading role at the Hospices de Beaune sales.
The Vineyard
The Charmes-Chambertin comes from one of the nine Grands Crus of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, in the Côte de Nuits, whose area is shared with that of Mazoyères-Chambertin. The vines thrive on clay-limestone soils, enriched with silt and gravelly scree in the upper part of the slope, offering good drainage conducive to the concentration of Pinot Noir. This position, slightly set back from a full easterly exposure, promotes gradual ripening and a pronounced freshness in the fruit.
Vinification and Ageing
The grapes used for the Charmes-Chambertin 2023 are harvested by hand, then sorted upon arrival at the winery so that only the healthiest berries are kept. Fermentation maceration lasts eighteen to twenty-one days in temperature-controlled wooden vats, allowing for gradual and controlled extraction. The wine is then aged for sixteen to eighteen months in oak barrels, 40 to 50% of which are new, giving it structure and aromatic complexity.
Grape Variety
This Grand Cru is made from Pinot Noir alone, emblematic of the Côte de Nuits and the Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin.
