Description

Antinori releases a lively and fruity great Tuscan wine

The estate

Dating back to the 10th century, Badia a Passignano is one of the oldest estates in the Chianti Classico appellation. Located in the heart of this famous wine region, its history, recorded in books preserved in Florence’s archives, has made it possible to trace information on the cultivation and production of Sangiovese. The Antinori – Badia a Passignano estate is a major player among great Italian wines.

The vineyard

The Badia a Passignano estate stretches across 223 hectares, of which 65 are dedicated to wine production. It is located below Sambuca Val di Pesa, 3 km south of Tenuta Tignanello. The vines are planted on a limestone soil, at 250-300 metres of altitude. Chianti Classico Gran Selezione est an emblematic cuvée among Chianti Classico wines.

The vintage

Autumn and winter were harsh and rainy. The weather improved during the first months of 2011 until April, bringing on an early budburst of the vines. Little rain accelerated the growth cycle. From the first days of August, temperatures rose until mid-September, which caused a gentle halt the ripening process. The harvests began on 27 September and were finished during the first week of October.

Winemaking and ageing

After destemming, the grapes were carefully selected then pressed. Alcoholic fermentation lasted about 10 days before maceration with the skins for 10-12 extra days. After racking, the wine was put into Hungarian oak barrels for about 18 months for spontaneous malolactic fermentation at the end of the year. The wine was then bottled and continues ageing.

Blend

Sangiovese (100%).
