The Castello Banfi 2020 Brunello di Montalcino opens with a velvety character that reflects the softness and generosity of a warm, dry vintage. The bouquet is redolent of cherry, blackcurrant, grilled herb, and sweet rose. This Brunello is open-knit and accessible, with sweet tannins on the finish.

Decanter

Produced in ample quantities, Banfi’s estate Brunello is assembled from its 173.5ha of vineyards expanding over the rolling hills in Montalcino’s southwest corner. Attractive though subtle to begin, it unveils with potpourri, thyme and vanilla on a backdrop of red cherry. The palate flaunts more obvious fruit ripeness as pliant tannins frame the whole. Sandy minerals add nuance to this ready-to-go, medium-to-full bodied package, which delivers plenty of satisfaction for its reasonable price point.

Youthful profile here with almost vinous character. Abundant violets and roses on the nose, together with cherries and pomegranates. Fruity again on the medium- to full-bodied palate with firm, velvety tannins, a lot of freshness and good length. Plenty of substance and alcohol. It will need time to integrate. Best after 2026.

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is a bright red/ruby color and is pretty on the nose with aromas of baked strawberries, sweet spices, dusty earth, and hints of lavender. Medium-bodied and weightless on the palate, with fine, dusty tannins, an elegantly fruity feel, it's a charming, approachable Brunello that retains good freshness and finesse. Drink it over the coming 6-8 years.

A Brunello di Montalcino combining elegance and power

The property

Founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, Castello Banfi is an emblematic estate of Montalcino, in Tuscany. Dominated by a 15th-century medieval castle, perched on a hill between Siena and Mount Amiata, it combines tradition and modernity. Under the direction of Enrico Viglierchio, the estate stands out for its innovative and sustainable viticultural practices, perfectly adapted to the cultivation of Sangiovese on clay-limestone soils, giving the wines great finesse and beautiful complexity.

The vineyard

The Brunello di Montalcino comes from vineyards located on the hills of the estate, with a low to moderate slope. The soils develop on different types of sediments, from marine Pliocene clayey sands to deep soils rich in limestone stones, up to moderately deep blue-gray clays that retain moisture.

The vintage

Mild temperatures and low rainfall during the winter and spring favored the early development of the vines. June experienced several rainy episodes accompanied by mild temperatures, allowing for optimal vegetative balance. The other summer months were hot and sunny, allowing for perfect veraison and maturation of the grapes.

Vinification and aging

The Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is vinified in French oak and stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature (25-30°C). The aging is done 80% in French oak barrels (90-60 hl) and 20% in French barriques (350 l) for at least 2 years.
