La RVF

Limited ripeness in this unfinished chardonnay. There is a touch of vegetal and earthy character from the vintage here, and the dosage is a bit strong as well. The palate lacks breadth. A sapid blanc de blancs, but not among the greats.

Description

A silky and aromatic Blanc de Blancs vintage champagne

The estate

Alfred Gratien founded the eponymous house in 1864. Located in Épernay, in the heart of the Champagne region, the Alfred Gratien House has always advocated the meticulous selection of the grapes, vinification in barrels and limited volumes in order to preserve the original character of the terroir and to bring out all the freshness of its wines.

The know-how of the Alfred Gratien Champagne House has been passed down from father to son for several generations and contributes to the unique style of each champagne.

The Alfred Gratien House looks after a vineyard of 1.56 hectares situated in the Premiers and Grands Crus of the Champagne region, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs on the Reims mountain. Long-standing partners provide the house with their grapes.

The vineyard

This Blanc de Blancs Brut 2015 by Alfred Gratien stems partly from classified Grands Crus vineyards in Avize and Cramant.

Vinification and ageing

Exclusive use of the first press. Since 1864, the vinification has been carried out entirely in oak barrels, at least fourth-fill wines. This method favours micro-oxygenation of the wines and confers complexity and roundness. Vinification on a plot basis without malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the original integrity of the fruit and the lively characteristic of these wines with their great ageing potential.

The blend

Chardonnay (100%).
