Driven by a passion for the world’s greatest terroirs and an entrepreneurial spirit, the Rothschild family founded the Barons de Rothschild Champagne House in 2005. Discover this prestigious name in Champagne.
Location and Vineyard Area
The Barons de Rothschild Champagne House is ideally located in the heart of the Champagne region, with vineyards mainly situated in the renowned terroirs of the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims. Most of the grapes come from parcels classified as Grand Cru and Premier Cru, ensuring access to fruit of exceptional quality.
A Fascinating Story
In 2005, for the first time in history, the three branches of the Rothschild family came together for a shared Champagne project. Today, they are represented by Philippe Sereys de Rothschild (Château Mouton Rothschild), Ariane de Rothschild (Château Clarke – Edmond de Rothschild Group), and Eric and Saskia de Rothschild (Château Lafite Rothschild). United by a shared vision, they created a great Champagne that blends the elegance of Chardonnay with extended ageing.
An Exceptional Terroir
Location and Exposure
The grapes used by the House primarily come from the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims—areas celebrated for the finesse and minerality they bring to Chardonnay, the signature varietal of the House.
Geology
The soils in these vineyards are predominantly chalk, providing optimal drainage. This allows vine roots to grow deep, giving the wines remarkable freshness and tension—a true hallmark of the Barons de Rothschild style.
Climate
Champagne benefits from a temperate oceanic climate, characterised by mild winters, moderate summers, and evenly distributed rainfall throughout the year. These conditions promote slow, steady grape ripening—crucial for achieving the finesse and complexity that define the House's Champagnes.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Champagnes are crafted using traditional methods and incorporate a high proportion of reserve wines to ensure consistency in style and quality. Dosage is deliberately kept low to preserve the purity of the fruit and the mineral expression of the terroir. Extended ageing in cellars develops aromatic complexity and lends a refined texture to each cuvée.
The Barons de Rothschild Champagne Style
The House’s style is defined by a focus on Chardonnay, preserved in its purest form through exceptionally low dosage. Sourced mainly from the prestigious vineyards of the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims, the grapes reveal the full delicacy and minerality of these exceptional terroirs.
