Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

A warm, inviting Champagne, despite its vivid structure. Sweet spices, leather, cedar and kumquat aromas give way to Meyer lemon, candied berry and briar flavors. This is racy, with a clean, bracing finish. Still very young, with the acidity dominating the finish. Best from 2014 through 2040.

The property

The Champagne Krug House was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary and passionate man. It holds a unique library in the world consisting of more than 150 reserve wines, some of which are over 15 years old.

The vineyard

With more than 250 different plots including the prestigious Clos du Mesnil and the Clos d’Ambonnay, Maison Krug holds an exceptional vine heritage in Champagne.

The wine

Of great rarity, this champagne exalts the expression of a single plot of pinot noir of 0.68 hectare called the Clos d’Ambonnay and comes from a single year, 1996. The first edition of this rare and prestigious champagne was born following the 1995 harvest.

The vintage

The year 1996 is distinguished by its alternation of warm and sunny days with cool nights, ideal condition to ensure optimal maturity of the berries while preserving infinite freshness.

The grape variety

This vintage 1996 champagne is a 100% pinot noir.
