A rare, expressive and gourmet vintage champagne

The producer

Established for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Philipponnat Champagne House is one of the historic names in the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values that guide this house, which has remained a family-owned business. Owned by the house since 1935, the mythical Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious plots in the Champagne region. This utter gem is the source of rare and exceptionally powerful champagnes.

The Philipponnat Champagne house reigns over an exceptional 20-hectare vineyard composed of Premiers and Grands Crus in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay.

The vineyard

The Clos des Goisses spreads across 5.83 hectares of vines and is situated on a 45° slope and planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. The name stems from the old Champagne dialect "gois", which means a very steep hillside. Resting on pure chalk soils and facing south, the Clos des Goisses is one of the warmest terroirs in the Champagne region. The plot’s average temperatures are 1.5°C higher than in the rest of the region. Due to its steep slope, the Clos des Goisses vineyard is worked by hand and the plots are rigorously monitored, excluding the use of synthetic herbicides and insecticides. The soil is worked with ploughing and weeding.

Vinification and ageing

The Clos des Goisses 2010 vintage by the Philipponnat Champagne House has been vinified without malolactic fermentation and under wood for part of the juice (53%). This exceptional champagne is aged within the house’s historical cellars dating from the 18th century for a minimum of 8 years. Extra-Brut, Clos des Goisses 2010 is dosed at 4.25 g/l.

The blend

For the elaboration of this 2010 vintage, only 5 plots out of the 14 that make up the Clos des Goisses were selected. The Clos des Goisses 2010 by Philipponnat is the result of a blend dominated by Pinot Noir (71%), completed by Chardonnay (29%).

Clos des Goisses 2010 by Philipponnat Champagne: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

This exceptional vintage champagne catches the eye with its beautiful golden yellow colour and fine foam.

Intensely expressive, the nose gives off beautiful fruity notes, reminiscent of candied citrus fruits such as lemon and bergamot. This is followed by pastry notes.

The mouth seduces by its greediness and its delicious feel reminiscent of exotic fruit such as mango and guava. Subtle woody and vanilla notes follow, while the fresh finish lingers for a long time, while still maintaining a high level of aromatic concentration.

Food and wine pairing

An exceptional vintage champagne, the Clos des Goisses 2010 by Philipponnat is best enjoyed with gourmet dishes. It is the perfect when served with chicken with morel mushrooms and a cream sauce, for example.

To fully appreciate the aromatic potential of this fine Champagne wine, it is recommended to decant it before tasting.
