Description
An aromatic and greatly elegant First Growth from Volnay
The estate
With an extensive heritage which spans over 1,000 years of history, Domaine du Château de Meursault is a benchmark among the greatest wines from Burgundy. Having expanded under the leadership of the Serre family at the beginning of the 19th century, the property has belonged to the Halley family since 2012.
Château de Mersault overlooks a vineyard of nearly 65 hectares, spread over more than 110 plots within Premier and Grand Crus cultivated only on Côte de Beaune in the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Savigny-Les-Beaune, Beaune, Pommard, Volnay, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Notably, Château de Meursault owns the prestigious Premier Crus “Les Charmes Dessus”, “Charmes”, “Perrières” and has a monopoly on the “Clos des Grands Charrons”.
The vineyard
The Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Chênes is made from a 2.6-hectare plot located at the top of the hill to the south of the vlilage of Volnay, on a land made up of white marl.
Winemaking and ageing
Manual sorting followed by destemming, then a second optical sorting. Cold pre-fermentation maceration for 5 to 6 days at 10°C before alcoholic fementation. Vinification is marked by punching down and pumping over. Pneumatic pressing, then separation of the juices. Ageing for around 15 months in barrels (of which 30% are new and 70% are from one to two previous wines).
Blend
The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Chênes by Domaine du Château de Meursault is 100% Pinot Noir.
Tasting
Colour
The wine is a deep, beautiful ruby colour.
Nose
The nose mixes fragrances of very ripe black fruits with spices.
Palate
The generous and elegant palate seduces with its aromas of black fruits and spices, its fine tannins and its structure.
Food and wine pairings
The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos de Chênes by Domaine du Château de Meursault goes perfectly with goose liver served on foil, rabbit ballotine, deer medallion and even a Saint-Nectaire cheese.
Keeping
This Burgundy wine can wait in the cellar until 2028 to express all of its aromatic richness.
Serving
For an optimal tasting, serve between 15°C and 17°C.
