The elegance and complexity of a white wine from the Montrachet Grand Cru appellation
The estate
Founded in 1880, Maison Joseph Drouhin is a historic figure in Burgundy. Initially focused on wine trading, the estate has grown over the generations to now oversee a vineyard of nearly 100 hectares spread across numerous prestigious appellations. Currently led by the fourth generation, with Frédéric Drouhin as chairman of the executive board, the family maintains full control over its land. A pioneer in the region, the estate stands out for its early and lasting commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, striving to faithfully express each terroir.
The vineyard
The Montrachet vineyard spans 7.8 hectares on a southeast-facing hillside, shared between the villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. The Laguiche family owns the largest private plot there, covering 2.06 hectares. The vines, planted at a high density of around 10,000 vines per hectare, grow on shallow soils composed of brown and red earth, rich in limestone pebbles and clay. This terroir benefits from rigorous management following the principles of organic and biodynamic farming, with controlled yields to concentrate the aromas of the grapes.
The vintage
The year 2023 was characterised by particularly warm temperatures. The growing cycle began early following a mild winter, with the first buds appearing as early as the end of March. Spring and summer offered mild, sunny conditions, accelerating the ripening of the berries. After flowering in early June, a dry and bright August allowed for the harvest of healthy grapes at perfect ripeness from the beginning of September.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Montrachet Grand Cru "Marquis de Laguiche" 2023 were hand-picked into small perforated crates, followed by careful sorting. In the cellar, the whole clusters undergo slow pneumatic pressing. After settling, the clear juices are transferred directly into French oak barrels, around 30% of which are new, to undergo alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 18 to 21 months, with regular tastings to fine-tune the lees work and the racking.
Grape variety
This wine is made from 100% Chardonnay.
