Description
The concentration and finesse of a Côteaux Champenois red wine from Louis Roederer
The estate
Founded in 1776 in Reims, Louis Roederer is a Champagne House that has remained family-owned and independent. After more than 200 years of existence, the Louis Roederer Champagne House is still owned by the same family. Today, headed by Frédéric Rouzaud, who represents the seventh generation of the family, Louis Roederer embodies the excellence of Champagne wines across the world through its vintages that are made like works of art.
The vineyard
With nearly 241 hectares of vines, the Maison Louis Roederer derives its strength from its extraordinary vineyard, made up entirely of Grand Crus and Premier Crus in the Marne Valley, the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. A veritable mosaic of terroirs, the Maison Louis Roederer's vineyards are divided into 410 plots that reflect the full diversity of the Champagne region's soils.
The wine
Produced in AOC Coteaux Champenois, Louis Roederer's Hommage à Camille "Charmont" celebrates the spirit of innovation and freedom of Camille Olry-Roederer, Frédéric Rouzaud's great-grandmother. This audacious woman is one of the most important figures in the history of the House.
Intended to be an innovative expression of the Champagne terroir, this plot-based collection, produced in limited series since 2002, is made from grapes harvested on a 43-acre plot in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, in the hamlet of Charmont.
The vintage
The winter was mild and wet. Despite the heatwaves of the summer, the harvested grapes were of a great quality, producing ripe and perfectly balanced wines.
Winemaking and ageing
Maceration for 14 days with 30% whole grapes. Spontaneous fermentation. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (1/3 new, 1/3 one-wine and 1/3 two-wine).
Blend
Pinot Noir (100%).
Characteristics and tasting tips for Hommage à Camille "Charmont" 2020 from Louis Roederer
Tasting
Colour
The wine is of a beautiful garnet red, adorned with shining highlights.
Nose
Concentrated and elegant, the nose mingles fruity (red fruits, fruits of the forest), floral (peony) and spicy (cocoa bean) scents with notes of dried leaves, larded and smoky.
Palate
The palate combines a silky texture with fine and precise tannins. This wine releases a freshness, characteristic of the limestone Champagne terroir, which confers a velvety, delicate power. The palate draws out its aromatic expression to a saline and lingering finish.
