Alison Napjus

A tightly meshed Champagne, with an up-front, broad feel that's quickly reined in and well-defined by racy acidity. Creamy on the palate, with the fine mousse carrying flavors of crème de cassis, lemon-infused pastry cream, smoked almond and oyster shell. Long, harmonious finish. Drink now through 2038. 500 cases imported.

Very complex nose with a wide spectrum of candied citrus, dried peach and mirabelle tart aromas. Bold and rich, particularly on the mid-palate, but with a great deal of subtlety and delicacy for the vintage. This is already delicious, but at the finish you really taste how this has been made for the long term. Great drive and persistence right at the end. Drink or hold.

Blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from grand cru vineyards. Deep golden straw colour. Full-bodied, meaty nose with lots of impact. Lovely, filigree mousse – very well judged for its impact on the palate. Flavours reach every bit of the palate. Quite a charmer! Definitely already approachable – in fact it tastes as though it would already have been pretty nice last year! A fine, succulent representative of this dry, ripe year. Pretty gorgeous actually. Maybe it won't be the longest-lasting Churchill but it's hugely satisfying now. (JR)

The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger's tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged September 2022.

Medium golden yellow with green reflections and a fine, lively mousse. Ripe yellow tropical fruit with herbal spice, yellow peach and honeydew melon on the nose, alongside dried apricots, hints of brioche, and a smoky, ethereal nuance of spices and menthol in the background—a very multi-faceted bouquet. Complex on the palate with a core of juicy mango, papaya, and pear providing full-bodied texture. There’s some nougat here too, underpinned by fine acidity. Shows very good length, an inviting and multi-faceted profile with secure ageing potential. (PM).

Coming from only Grand Cru villages of Montagne de Reims and always boasting a large proportion of Pinot Noir in the cuvée, the 2015 Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Brut displays a medium straw color and has a stunning nose that’s highly aromatic with toasted croissant, kirsch, and orange peel. With a noble structure and feel to the wine, it’s full-bodied with broad shoulders but has remarkable balance for this hot vintage. The mouthfeel is exceptional and long, with vibrant acidity, a rounded and elegant mousse, a chalky texture, and a mouthwatering finish. Given the vintage, it’s showing a more approachable side already, although it should have significant longevity ahead of it. In its youth, it’s more approachable than the 2013, and I would perhaps drink some of these now and then wait to be surprised as it holds on and likely has a wide drinking window. Drink 2024-2040. 7 grams per liter of dosage.

There is a wonderful biscuity aroma to this Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne. Named after the British war-time prime minister and an avid consumer of Champagne, the wine is mature, full of ripe yeasty flavors and concentration. The wine, from a great vintage, is at a perfect stage and ready to be drunk. But the wine will also age for many years, certainly until 2030.

Description

An iconic champagne combining structure and aromatic richness

The estate

Founded in 1849, the Champagne Pol Roger House has perpetuated for 5 generations the excellence of its expertise and its perpetual quest for perfection. An essential reference beyond borders, Maison Pol Roger is the official supplier to the British Crown as well as to the finest Michelin-starred establishments.

As one of the last houses to still practice hand riddling of champagne bottles across its entire production, Pol Roger holds its singularity in its style, authentically expressing the full potential of exceptional Champagne terroirs.

The vineyard

Maison Pol Roger oversees an exceptional Champagne vineyard of 92 hectares of vines, including the finest parcels of the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.

The wine

"There is only one answer to defeat and that is victory," Sir Winston Churchill, to whom we owe this quote, was particularly fond of the champagnes from Maison Pol Roger, "the most delectable address in the world" according to him, to celebrate moments of glory and forget those of sorrow.

In 1975, Maison Pol Roger decided to pay tribute to this great figure by creating the Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill. Crafted from Grand Cru pinot noir and chardonnay, this exceptional champagne is produced only during exceptional vintages.

2015 is the 21st vintage of this cuvée.

The vintage

A particularly sunny winter in February and March preceded warmer weather conditions favoring bud break in mid-April. Flowering was recorded in mid-June. From the end of May until the second half of August, hot and dry conditions ensured beautiful maturation, before rainy episodes as harvest approached. The harvest was carried out between September 2 and 18.

Vinification and aging

Gentle pressing is performed following harvest. A first settling is carried out at the pressing center before a second settling in the house's vat room, cold (6°C) for 24 hours. Alcoholic fermentation at low temperature (18°C) in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Separate vinification by grape variety and by cru before final blending. Malolactic fermentation. After blending and bottling, the secondary fermentation and aging take place in the house's historic cellars.

Produced in limited quantities, this 2015 vintage champagne from Pol Roger benefits from 9 years of aging. Following disgorgement, an additional aging of at least 3 months is carried out before release.

Blend

Kept secret, the blend is composed of pinot noir, whose predominance provides structure and robustness, as well as chardonnay, a grape variety renowned for its elegance and finesse.
