A grand cru from the Côte de Nuits combining power and roundness
The estate
Founded in 1720 by Edme Champy, a cooper from Beaune, the Champy House is Burgundy’s oldest wine merchant. Under the direction of the Meurgey family since 1990, it farms 21 hectares on the Côte de Beaune, between Volnay and Corton-Charlemagne, with half of the vineyard certified organic. The only in-town winemaking site still in operation in Beaune, Champy stands out for its 15th-century cellars and its historic collaboration with Louis Pasteur on the pasteurization of wines. Dimitri Bazas, technical director and winemaker, has been carrying on a traditional winemaking approach for more than twenty years in a kilometer of cellars crossed by the Aigue, creating optimal natural conditions.
The vineyard
The Charmes-Chambertin is located in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits. This grand cru benefits from an exceptional terroir of limestone with a fine proportion of clay marls. The vines are planted between 240 and 280 meters above sea level, on east-facing parcels, thus enjoying optimal morning sunshine. This easterly exposure promotes a gradual, harmonious ripening of the pinot noir grapes.
Vinification and aging
The Champy House upholds traditional winemaking for this Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010, respecting ancestral Burgundian methods. The wines are crafted in the historic 15th-century cellars where the Aigue runs, creating ideal natural conditions for aging. This traditional approach brings out all the power and roundness characteristic of the appellation.
