Description
Tasting characteristics and advice for the Corton Grand Cru 2013 from Domaine Champy
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a beautiful ruby color with garnet highlights, reflecting harmonious aging while retaining promising vibrancy.
Nose
The nose is precise and concentrated, expressing pronounced notes of small black fruits, notably sour cherry, set against a foundation of smoky minerality. Aeration gradually reveals tertiary aromas of tea, dried leaves, and subtle floral touches, accompanied by a distinctive saline mineral signature.
Palate
On the palate, this wine shows a dense structure with vibrant acidity that brings great precision to the whole. The tannins, present yet fine, add elegance and refinement. The fruit concentration is complemented by notes of licorice, coffee, and amaretto, offering ethereal complexity and a lingering finish.
Food and wine pairings
This Corton Grand Cru pairs perfectly with roasted poultry, notably duck and partridge, as well as hare à l'orange. It also matches well with aged cheeses such as Comté, lean beef preparations, and mushroom dishes that echo its tertiary notes.
Serving and aging
The Corton Grand Cru 2013 can be enjoyed now while also offering considerable aging potential for the years ahead.
A structured, mineral Burgundy Grand Cru from Maison Champy
The estate
Founded in 1720 in Beaune, Champy is the oldest Burgundy wine house still in operation. Owned by the AdVini group since 2016, it is now led by Jean-Baptiste Mouton. The house owns around 21 hectares of vineyards on the Côte de Beaune, with a particular focus in Pernand-Vergelesses. A historic pioneer with the invention of pasteurization in its cellars in the 1860s, Maison Champy stands out for its early commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, certified since 2022. Its Eiffel-style cellars built in 1890 bear witness to its exceptional architectural heritage.
The vineyard
This Grand Cru comes from the Montagne de Corton, the only red Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune. This outstanding terroir spans more than 150 hectares and benefits from clay-limestone soils enriched with marl. The specific plot, "Le Rognet," covers 0.3 hectares of vines around 50 years old, planted on ferruginous oolite soils that give the wine its distinctive mineral structure and fine tannins.
The vintage
The 2013 vintage in Bourgogne was marked by a very short harvest window, when the grapes simultaneously reached optimal ripeness and perfect health. This precision in harvest timing, combined with hand harvesting and meticulous sorting, proved crucial to the wine’s final quality.
Winemaking and aging
The Corton Grand Cru 2013 was vinified with an approach that respects the terroir, favoring the natural expression of the plot. Maison Champy’s winemaking philosophy aims to reveal the specific characteristics of each terroir rather than impose a uniform style, allowing the wine to fully express its origin.
