The elegant harmony of a Brunello with great ageing potential

The estate

The Donatella Cinelli Colombini: Casato Prime Donne estate is located in Montalcino, at the heart of the Tuscany wine region and to the south of the Chianti appellation. Owned by the Donatella Cinelli Colombini family since the 16th century, the estate experienced a turning point during the last three generations, which has been passed down from mother to daughter. Since 1998, Donatella Cinelli Colombini has been carefully reestablishing its ancestral prestige. To this end, its team is entirely made up of women possessing great expertise and know-how, making the estate the first in Italy to be entirely made up of women.

The vineyard

The Casato Prime Donne Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is produced in Montalcino, the best place there is to cultivate Sangiovese. Indeed, this grape variety has been cultivated on these lands for hundreds, even thousands of years. The 10 best hectares of vines are chosen from the 16 at the estate to develop the Brunello each year. The vineyard is located in a cool area in the north of the Montalcino region at 225 metres above sea level. The southwest-facing vines are rooted in a soil rich in clay and silt. To preserve this precious terroir, Donatella Cinelli Colombini operates its vineyard through organic farming.

The wine

The Brunello is an absolutely extraordinary quality, embodying a red wine which promises extremely long ageing as the cru magnifies itself through the test of time.

Winemaking and ageing

After the manual and plot-based harvests, the best bunches are taken to the cellar in less than 30 minutes. In this way, the quality of the fruit remains intact. A new sorting is carried out at the cellar. The grapes ferment in concrete or stainless steel vats, with a punching down system which enables vinification without a pump. Vinification is traditional and delicate, and yeasts from Montalcino are used to obtain wines which reflect the identity of their terroir. The wine then successively ages in casks and large barrels. The receptacles come from small French artisan workshops which work on custom-made wood so as to find a perfect balance for the wine. Ageing in oak lasts for between 2 and 3 years, during which the wine also ages in large barrels traditional to the region. Finally, the Brunello ages in bottles for 6 additional months before being put on the market.

This is a 100% Sangiovese wine.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
This is a special selezione expression. The Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne starts off a bit closed and shy, however it soon gains speed thanks to the intensity of its berry fruit, spice and camphor ash aromas. This wine is built to withstand longer cellar aging. It is firmly compact and tight at its core, recalling a Brunello from a cooler vintage. However, much of that 2015 sunshine and dark fruit exuberance comes through nonetheless. Fruit comes from a 10-hectare site with a large component of clay in the soils. Only 6,600 bottles were made, and the wine was released in January 2020.
