Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

A richly fragrant rosé Champagne, leading with grilled nut and ground coffee notes, segueing into exotic saffron and curry spice aromas that season the palate's panoply of poached apricot, toasted brioche, spun honey and crème de cassis flavors. Shows a fine, satiny mousse, with a bright spine of acidity that creates a long, mouthwatering frame for the expanding profile. Disgorged spring 2018. Drink now through 2030.

Bettane+Desseauve

It's astonishing: this rosé is a tribute to the Maison’s entire philosophy. The youngest wine, 2012, serves the 71% reserve wines—or perhaps the reverse; it’s intriguing and worthy of salute and respect. Its ruby hue shines, and the emotion is instantly abyssal, both in verticality and breadth of spectrum. The silkiness of noble wood is adorned with roasted, smoky, and black-truffled essences. Deeper still, a wild red character defines the fruit—almost liqueur, almost cream. The forest floor enthralls; its loyal and majestic imprint undulates and transforms, endowed with great potential. Its supporting servant is grandiose in the phase of progressive opening and aromatic definition. Indeed, other fragrances carry us toward nougat-making and strolls through flower and spice markets. Peanut oils very nobly polish the mouthfilm; within, the warmth of black fruits delivers a savory natural sweetness. We’re at the dawn of autumn and those grand mushroom harvests. Like a gradual, precise immersion, the finish magnetizes with a scintillating, spiritual salinity, highlighted and accompanied by blood orange beneath a sheath of tannins with exemplary granularity—protective, evocative, eternally faithful. A work of art to admire for eternity.

The balance between maturity and fruit in this Champagne is exemplary. It gives both ripeness to the red-currant fruits and a fine nutty richness that meld together seamlessly. This is a beautiful wine, perfectly ready to drink but also sure to age well in bottle.

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Krug Rosé 24th Edition

Tasting

Appearance
The appearance captivates with its intensity.

Nose
The nose reveals fragrances of strawberry and pomegranate.

Palate
Combining structure and liveliness, the palate is supported by a delicate balance between freshness and harmony, granted by the quality of the reserve wines, notably 2006 and 2008.

A rich and ideally balanced rosé champagne

The estate

Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug in Reims, the Champagne Krug House is a pillar of excellence in Champagne. With vineyards spread across several regions of Champagne, it stands out for its library of reserve wines, enabling the creation of champagnes with consistent quality. Now led by Olivier Krug, the house remains true to the innovative spirit of its founder.

The vineyard

With more than 250 different plots including the prestigious Clos du Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay, the Krug House holds an exceptional vineyard heritage in Champagne.

The wine

Born from the imagination of the fifth generation of the Krug family, this unique rosé champagne follows the same philosophy as Krug Grande Cuvée, also transcending the very notion of vintage. Each edition perpetuates this tradition of excellence. The 24th Edition of Krug Rosé is structured around the 2012 harvest. It is composed of 22 wines from 7 different years, the oldest dating from 2006 and the youngest from 2012.

The vintage

Frost, rain, storms, and hail indeed hit the Champagne vineyards during the winter and spring, before an exceptionally dry ripening period (unseen since 1974), resulting in a 20% decrease in the harvest.

Winemaking and aging

This exceptional cuvée is aged for about 7 years in the estate's cellars.

Blend

40% pinot noir (including 11% traditionally macerated red pinot noir on their skins), 28% chardonnay, and 32% pinot meunier.
