Philipponnat reveals a fruity and elegant rosé champagne

The estate

Having been established for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Philipponnat Champagne House is a historical name in the Champagne wine region. Uniqueness, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values which guide this house with a familial spirit. Owned by the house since 1935, the legendary Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious clos in Champagne. This jewel comes from rare champagnes and is endowed with an exceptional power.

The vineyard

The Philipponnat Champagne House overlooks an exceptional vineyard which makes up 20 hectares in Premier and Grand Crus in Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Avenay. The Clos des Goisses covers 5.8 hectares of vines on a 45° slope planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It takes its name from the word “gois”, which denominates a very steep hillside in old Champagne dialect. Lying upon south-facing soils of pure chalk, Clos des Goisses is one of the hottest terroirs in Champagne, with temperatures that are 1.5°C higher on average than the rest of the region. Due to its very steep slope, the Clos des Goisses vineyard is subject to manual work with the plots being monitored extremely rigorously, excluding the use of synthetic herbicides and insecticides. To eliminate unsightly growths, the soils are ploughed and weeded.

The wine

Produced in very limited quantities, the Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé 2009 is the 8th rosé cuvée by Clos des Goisses, which has been produced since 1999.

The vintage

A harsh winter preceded a stormy spring. Although the mild and humid conditions brought about significant mildew pressure, the hot and dry weather before the harvests allowed the grapes to be harvested in an exceptional sanitary state, fruity and with a moderate level of acidity resulting from a significant amount of sunshine, greater than that of 2008 and closer to the 2002 vintage.

Winemaking and ageing

Total vinification in wood (sous bois). Malolactic fermentation was not carried out to preserve the wine’s natural acidity and to counterbalance the terroir’s powerful expression. This champagne has been aged in the cellars of the Philipponnat House for nine years. Its dosage is 4.5g/l.

The Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé 2009 by Philipponnat is produced from a blend of 64% Pinot Noir and 36% Chardonnay.

The wine is a light pink, slightly coppery colour. The effervescence is persistent and delicate.

The nose is greatly elegant, mixing notes of cherry and red berries.

The palate unveils aromas of raspberry which, over the course of the tasting, develop flavourful notes of kirsch with power and finesse. The finish seduces with its beautiful persistence.

Food and wine pairings

The perfect partner for gourmet dishes, the Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé 2009 by Philipponnat goes perfectly with a roast pigeon alongside fragrances of raspberry.

The Clos de Goisses Juste Rosé 2009 by Philipponnat can wait in the cellar for several decades to unveil its entire aromatic palette.
