The structure and balance of an exceptional vintage champagne
The estate
Located for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Philipponnat Champagne House is one of the historic names in the Champagne region. Uniqueness, excellence, generosity, and simplicity are the values that guide this house, whose spirit has remained family-oriented. Owned by the house since 1935, the legendary Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious clos in Champagne. This jewel is the origin of rare champagnes endowed with exceptional power.
The Philipponnat Champagne House oversees an exceptional vineyard spanning 20 hectares of Premier and Grand Cru sites, particularly in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, and Avenay.
The vineyard
The Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru 2013 by Philipponnat is crafted from renowned Champagne terroirs. While the pinot noir comes mainly from the historic "Léon" vineyard in Ay, the chardonnay is sourced from the Verzy vineyard.
The name of the Cuvée 1522 Grand Cru by Philipponnat refers to the year the Philipponnat family settled in the village of Ay.
The vintage
The winter was cold and not very sunny, marked by frequent frosts and snowfall until March. Spring started late, with an exceptionally cold and rainy May, slowing down vine growth. Flowering was delayed, taking place in mid-June in the early-ripening terroirs, under cold and rainy conditions, with low to moderate yields. The later-ripening terroirs flowered at the end of June under better conditions. After a very wet June, summer remained warm and sunny, allowing for good ripeness. Harvest began on October 5th in Mareuil-sur-Ay, yielding a fresh and elegant vintage.
Winemaking and Aging
Crafted from the finest vineyards of the House, this exceptional cuvée is partially vinified in oak without malolactic fermentation to preserve its freshness and develop its complexity. Benefiting from eight years of aging on lees, this 2013 vintage champagne is a refined expression of the minerality, freshness, and balance of the greatest Champagne terroirs. Its dosage is 4.25 g/liter.
Blend
Pinot noir (70%)
Chardonnay (30%).
