Deutz : Hommage à William Deutz 2010

A smooth and flavoursome vintage champagne

The estate

The Deutz Champagne House was founded in 1838 in Aÿ by two Prussians, one of which was William Deutz. One was a wine merchant and the other sold champagne. The two founders were both equally involved in bottling, disgorging, dosage and labelling, even before they owned their own champagne and vineyards. Throughout the 20th century, the heirs of the founders gradually shaped the vineyard by buying plots in the best terroirs of the Champagne region. Today, the Deutz Champagne House is owned by the famous Roederer family. The great history of Deutz champagnes portrays a harmonious style between both virtuosity and refinement.

The wine

The Hommage à William Deutz 2010 cuvée is made exclusively from the rgapes grown in the Meurtet (52%) and La Côte Glacière (48%) parcels.

The blend

Hommage à William Deutz 2010 comprises 100% Pinot Noir grapes from Aÿ.

The tasting

Deep and luminous, the colour reflects a beautiful golden hue, with subtle copper highlights. The effervescence is fine and regular.

The nose opens with delicate fruity fragrances (vine peach, quince, apricot, mirabelle plum). When aerated, the bouquet gains in complexity and develops aromas of honey and almond.

Pure and firm, the palate reveals a perfect balance between freshness and complexity which gives this wine a deliciously harmonious and refined sensation. Although the attack is bold, the palate is seduced by this champagne’s minerality, its silky feel and its aromas of yellow and white fruits enhanced by a hint of ginger. The finish is delicious and marked by a subtle iodine note, features of the hillsides from which this wine stems.

Food and wine pairing

Enjoy as an apéritif, Hommage à William Deutz 2010 will complement grilled lobster, tuna carpaccio, partridge pastilla, chaource cheese, sushi and other Asian dishes.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
Made exclusively from Pinot Noir grapes from Ay, grown in the Meurtet (52%) and La Côte Glacière (48%) parcels, the 2010 Brut Pinot Noir Parcelles d'Ay Hommage à William Deutz is a newly created Champagne within the Deutz portfolio, and it's dedicated to the company's founder. The vineyards Hommage are entirely owned by Deutz, which can be a great advantage in unsafe vintages such as 2010. Due to botrytis infections caused by the heavy rain on the 8th of September, the 2010 harvest (between 15th and 25th September) required careful selection, which reduced the anticipated yields by 25% to 30%. The 2010 was aged for seven years on the lees prior to the disgorgement (in April 2017, and it was released in December 2017. Its bouquet is clear, bright, fresh and delicately aromatic, with sweet red cherry, floral and flowery aromas, almond notes and remarkable finesse. Intensely fruity and round but with great finesse, this is an elegant, firmly structured, fresh and persistent cuvée with bright acidity, good mineral tension and pretty high dosage of nine grams per liter. There are lovely fruit flavors in the aftertaste. This is a beautifully delicate but complex Hommage to be enjoyed with food. Tasted June 2018.
