The Louis Roederer Champagne House: an expression of soil and terroir

Perfecting the art of champagne over more than two centuries…

Founded in the late eighteenth century, the Louis Roederer Champagne House is one of the last independent, family-run Champagne estates. In 1833, it was inherited by Louis Roederer, who set about enriching the house with a unique new style, achieved through a certain spirit and flavour in his wines. He did this by studying the specific characteristics of each plot, gradually expanding the estate with carefully chosen new parcels. Louis Roederer moved against the customs of the time, believing that great champagne finds its source in the soil. Combining his passion for wine and love of tradition, the founder carved out a great legacy for the famous estate, which has born his name ever since.

The spirit of a great champagne defined by its terroir of origin

Spread over 240 hectares of vines, the Louis Roederer property is located in the heart of Champagne’s three main terroirs. The diversity and generosity of the landscape results in a rich palette of aromas and flavours, allowing for the creation of magnificent wines. A “custom-tailored” viticulture, adapted to the mosaic of different soil profiles, results in an exceptional level of maturity in the grapes. The labour-intensive work in the vineyard continues with a parcel-by-parcel vinification in the cellar, respecting the origin and traceability of the grapes and preserving their natural balance. The team also shows great respect to the vineyards and their soils, relying on sustainable viticulture practices: the soils are fully ploughed, a gentle pruning technique facilitates the flow of sap in the vines, and massal selection is chosen to propagate them. The estate is even home to the very first private vine nursery in Champagne ... Each vintage by Louis Roederer is a pure expression of the terroir and its soils.

Cristal 2008

The iconic cuvée

Made with fruit sourced from the hard limestone subsoils of 100% Louis Roederer plots, the Cristal cuvée is the Champagne house’s most famous. Cristal blends grapes from only the best parcels of the estate’s seven vineyards and is produced only in the "great years". After 10 years of ageing, Cristal 2008 is finally revealed, in a flurry of purity and harmony. Born from the greatest limestone terroirs, this vintage is unique, bearing the unmistakable signature of the house and a pure expression of its vineyards. While the terroir of Montagne de Reims lends the wine structure, that of the Marne Valley offers a roundness and fruit, and the Côte des Blancs adds a mineral touch. Cristal 2008 is the signature of success at Louis Roederer, one of the house’s greatest masterpieces yet!
